I am a teacher and researcher of media and communications based in Taipei. Born in Salt Lake City, I was raised in the 1980s in Muzha, the southernmost district of Taipei City, Taiwan. I spent my adolescence and early adulthood in the United States, first in Maryland, then northern and southern California, and eventually, Iowa City, where I earned a Ph.D. in Mass Communications from The University of Iowa. Since relocating to Taiwan in 2002, I have researched on a number of topics in media production and cultural politics, often adopting inter-Asian, transnational, qualitative, and cultural studies approaches. I teach at the Graduate Institute of Mass Communication, National Taiwan Normal University.
Currently, I am working on a research project about Taiwan’s podcast production culture in the context of local sound media development. I have produced several podcast shows, including an interview show with Taiwanese researchers of popular music, an ongoing audio documentary about the diverse people living, working, and playing in the area of my university (Shida), and a podcast of first-person audio essays by the graduate students at my institute.
